Emergency Care & Trauma Care

Emergency department care ranges from walk-in urgent care to multi-system trauma care to cardiac care and stabilization.

ACHS is designated as a Level IV Community Trauma Care Facility through the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH). The trauma team is in place and ready to respond 24/7 for the care and stabilization of time critical injuries as well as coordination of air or ground transportation to a regional facility for continued medical care if needed.

ACHS provides the following types of emergency care and trauma care:

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – urgent and emergent treatment of life-threatening cardiovascular conditions that will cause or have caused cardiac arrest, using advanced medical procedures, medications, and techniques.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - advanced and systematic approach to pediatric assessment for treating critically sick infants and children.
• Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) – protocol to manage trauma victims in the first hour after trauma occurs to ensure optimal long-term outcome.

ACHS emergency department staff, who are specially trained and highly experienced in emergency care, include physicians, nurse practitioners, physician's assistans, registered nurses, licensed pratical nurses, paramedics and emergency medical technicians.

In addition, physicians at academic medical centers can provide real time consultation to ACHS through telehealth services provided by Avel eEmergency. Specialties include stroke, trauma, cardiac and sexual assault. ACHS’s onsite providers and staff consult with these specialist as needed to provide expert care.
